5 Must-See Waterfalls in the Bay of Plenty

The coastal Bay of Plenty is a great mix of slow-paced beach towns, exciting rural adventures and so much more. Happening across a sunny day in the Bay of Plenty means you can enjoy a dip in a waterfall and finish with a nice picnic. Rainy days are equally great for creating a moody scene; perfect for a photo opportunity! There is plenty of exploring to be done in the Bay of Plenty but the waterfalls are not to be missed. 1.McLaren Falls

Getting to the McLaren Falls is fairly easy thanks to a short and accessible track. The walk will take around 10 minutes and can be made a full loop. Escape the hustle and bustle of Tauranga and stroll through native bush until you arrive at the viewing platform. Feel free to take a dip in the cold yet refreshing freshwater pools. It’s the perfect lazy afternoon of chasing waterfalls in the Bay of Plenty, and is suitable for the whole family.

2. Raparapahoe Falls

Raparapahoe Falls is a stunning 3-meter waterfall that leads into a clear, freshwater pool. It’s a bit of a tougher walk to Raparapahoe Falls. With the 1km track and steep descent, it’s advised to leave those jandals and slippery shoes at home. However, the scenic waterfall is definitely worth the descent. Be sure to reward yourself with a swim! Even better, you are allowed to take your furry friend along with you on this track.

3. Whataroa Falls

Whataroa Falls consists of several separate waterfalls and is equally about the scenic walk as it is about checking out the waterfalls. A 2-hour return track with beautiful native trees such as Rimu and the walk is filled with signposts of information and images. Again, you can always cool off with a swim on hot days and enjoy a picnic. This waterfall and bush walk in the Bay of Plenty is a must-see!

4. Kaiate Falls (Te Rerekawa)

The track to the Kaiate Falls is a 60-minute loop that will reward you with not one but two waterfalls. The first boasts three beautifully cascading falls and the main fall is an incredible 15-metres tall. You are also allowed to take your dogs on this track for extra company. Although no swimming is allowed, going on a rainy day presents a beautiful and moody photo opportunity. This spot is about a 30-minute drive from Tauranga.

5. Tarawera Falls

Tarawera Falls is an incredibly scenic waterfall. A short and accessible 40-minute return walk, it can be done with the whole family. Why not turn this into a day trip and enjoy the impressive waterfall with a picnic lunch. On warmer days it is also the perfect spot for a swim. If you are up for a longer adventure you can continue along the track to the Tarawera Outlet. Permits may be required when visiting the Tarawera Falls and Tarawera Outlet, so be sure to check with the Department of Conservation or the local Information Centre for details.
