Think mossy green forest, untouched waterfalls and sweeping views of Taranaki. Egmont National Park is the second smallest National Park in New Zealand and is mostly dominated by Mt Taranaki. This iconic, volcanic peak is a big drawcard for avid travellers and photographers. And there is plenty more to see in this National Park! Check out our list of 5 things to do in Egmont National Park.
1. Dawson Falls
The Dawson Falls area is easily accessible and incredibly scenic. There are two short walking tracks in the area, one being the walk to Dawson Falls. It’s just a 10-minute walk (one-way) through the dense, green forest. The falls are a picturesque sight, with the water rushing past ferns and moss.
2. Pouakai Circuit
When in Egmont National Park the Pouakai Circuit is a must-do! This is a 25km track and takes 2 – 3 days. Begin at the Egmont National Park visitor centre and stay in huts along the way. This is the one to do for those classic views of Mt Taranaki of the Ahukawakawa Swamp.
3. Wilkies Pools Loop
The Wilkies Pools are a stunning cascade of waterfalls flowing down into clear, small pools. The water streams down an old lava flow, making this pretty unique. The loop track is 1.9km and if you choose to just walk to the pools from the Dawson Falls visitor centre, it only takes 20 minutes. It’s a great place for a swim in summer!
4. York Road Loop
This track is a 5.3km loop and takes around 3 hours to complete. Walk the loop clockwise to follow the numbered points of interest along the way – you’re exploring remnants of the old Egmont railway! This track is a great representation of Egmont National Park, with native, dewy forest and, if you’re lucky, sun streaming through the canopy of trees.
5. Mount Taranaki Summit
The Mount Taranaki summit track is a challenging full day hike. It’s 6.3km one way and has a crazy elevation gain of 1600m. On a clear day, hikers are treated to spectacular views of Egmont National Park and beyond. The best time of year to attempt this hike is summer or February to mid-April and the Egmont National Park visitor centre is the place to go for up to date track information and conditions.
