Hokitika is a West Coast hub and is perfect as a base for multiple nights on your West Coast adventure. This town has everything you need, plus stunning natural attractions that will look great on your Instagram feed!
1. Hokitika Gorge
Sneak some of that famous, vibrant water into your feed with shots from Hokitika Gorge. The gorge is a 30-minute drive from Hokitika town and an enjoyable 15-minute walk from the car park, with viewing platforms along the way. Tip – bring some insect repellent with you! The sandflies love this spot too.
2. Hokitika Beach
Get some of the real West Coast vibes at Hokitika Beach. It’s beautifully rugged and exposed. You’re likely to find plenty of smooth, pearly white rocks and driftwood scattered along the sand. You can even see Aoraki Mt Cook from this beach, New Zealand’s highest mountain.
3. Lake Kaniere
Don’t make the mistake of only visiting the Hokitika Gorge and Beach. Lake Kaniere is tucked away in the forest and is utterly stunning and peaceful. A great spot to relax and take in the sights, have a picnic at one of the many designated picnic spots or check out some short walks.
4. Hokitika Glowworm Dell
Glowworms have to be one of the most glorious creatures. Coming to life at night, they light up the lush canyon and consume the space like tiny fairy lights. It’s only minutes from the road and is the best free show in town!
5. Dorothy Falls
Dorothy Falls is extremely picturesque, with smooth, large rocks interrupting the pool of water and dense green bush fringing the falls. Located in the Lake Kaniere Scenic Reserve, it’s an easy 30-minute drive from Hokitika although feels completely remote and untouched.
