Cable Bay / Rotokura is one of New Zealand’s best-kept secrets. Though it’s only 20 minutes from the vibrant city of Nelson, you’ll feel like you’re in another world as you enter this hidden gem and become one with the rural wilderness of New Zealand.
The bay derives its name from the first international cables laid here in the 19th century. It took 11 days to successfully complete a cable connection between New Zealand and Australia; with the first transmission taking place on 21st February 1876.
Cable Bay Walkway
Cable Bay Walkway is one of the most popular things to do in the area, offering spectacular views of the hilly backdrop and rocky coastal waters. As you hike, you can enjoy views of Nelson City and Boulder Bank along with two national parks; Kahurangi and Abel Tasman.
The vibrant waters of the bay invite you in for a swim, with patches of sand for a day of relaxing. At low tide, the boulders in the area provide some excellent rock pooling opportunities where you can see crabs, starfish, and sea slugs, among other interesting sea creatures.
Next to the bay, the Horoirangi Marine Reserve is the perfect spot to enjoy snorkelling or diving. Here, the reef extends up to 400 metres with a depth of 20 metres, and a rugged boulder landscape lying beneath the water’s surface. In the reefs, you’ll find an array of anemones, shellfish, sea squirts and sponges. Starfish, crustaceans and snails move steadily around the boulders. Ambush starfish are particularly abundant around Horoirangi, with vibrant colours that perfectly contrast the subdued tones of the rocks to which they cling.
If you’re looking for a spot of culture, the area has plenty on offer. Cable Bay has a fascinating history; having the cable that provided New Zealand’s only communication link with the rest of the world until 1902.
Both the Marlborough Museum and the Nelson Provincial Museum are great spots to visit to learn more about the area and get some insight into why the entire region is so special.
Cable Bay also hosts the largest adventure park in the region. Get the adrenaline racing on the Skywire Experience, one of the longest flying fox’s in the world that offers epic views of Nelson as you fly through the forest canopy at up to 100 kph! Take a 14 km quad bike ride through enchanting forest trails or experience one of the local tracks on a mountain bike.
Down the road, you’ll find Cable Bay Shooting Adventures, where you can go dragon hunting in the forest and explore Nelson’s only 3D archery range. Cross glistening streams and listen to the birdsong of the native species as you search for mythical creatures hidden between the trunks of giant trees.
After all that adventure, enjoy an onsite refreshment at the Base Cafe, where you’ll find a range of locally crafted beverages, gourmet pies, and homemade burgers to satisfy your cravings.
There is varied accommodation available in Cable Bay, from budget motels to luxury campgrounds and B&Bs.
