When planning a trip to Auckland, the little-known town of Kumeu might not register on your to-do list, but this wine-growing region has the perfect blend of urban vibes and country charm. From wine tastings and platter experiences to horse trekking on sandy coastlines, there are plenty of memorable things to do in Kumeu!
1. Visit a winery
With Kumeu hosting Auckland’s oldest winery, it’s no surprise that the quality of wine producers is high here. In the Soljans Estate Winery, you’ll find a range of Pinot Gris, Pinotage, and Chardonnay, with an onsite cafe where you can find the perfect food accompaniment. Meanwhile, at Kerr Farm Wine, you can sit down with the makers to discuss the process of growing Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, among other grapes. If you’re a fan of Chardonnay, check out Kumeu River Winery, where you can view 30 hectares of the vineyard and purchase the perfect bottle to accompany your travels. Kumeu winery visits and tastings are an absolute must-do!
2. Grab a drink at New Zealand’s oldest Riverside Tavern
For the past 160 years, The Riverhead has been a site for socialising and snacks. This tavern holds many tales within its walls thanks to a rich history of travellers. Dine in this relaxed setting and make your own memories amidst a backdrop of 100-year-old oak trees. Try a different seasonal menu with locally sourced ingredients that create many dishes, from sumptuous steaks to premium pork belly.
3. A full-day walk
There are several Kumeu walks to enjoy, and the Te Henga Walkway is one of the most highly recommended. This seven-hour return trip stretches between Muriwai and Bethells Beach, offering spectacular views of the sweeping sand dunes and lush lagoons of the west coast. This walk also provides the chance to spot some local residents, including dolphins and fur seals. Before you head out, ensure that you check the DOC website for the current safety of the track and be aware that it does get steep in some places.
4. Enjoy a scenic short walk
If seven hours of hiking doesn’t sound like your idea of fun, try one of the shorter walks in the area. Less than 20 minutes from Kumeu are the Mokoroa Falls. These 11-metre-high falls are accessible by a one-and-a-half-kilometre track that takes about 40 minutes to traverse. Along the way, enjoy the sights and sounds of the native bush as you make your way along the Mokoroa Stream. When you reach the lookout platform, see if you can spot the top of Hoheria Falls. If the water is low enough, you can descend the wooden staircase and cross the stream for better views of these sister waterfalls.
5. A Treetop Adventure
Fifteen minutes from Kumeu you’ll find Tree Adventures, offering a range of courses to suit all confidence and ability levels. Assess your skills in ‘Tarzan’s Test’ as you push your limits at heights of up to 14 metres above the ground. Try swings, hangers, and tree surfing before gliding down the largest flying fox in the park. If you’re not a fan of heights, don’t worry. Tree Huggin’ is only two to three metres above the ground and ideal for children and beginners of all ages, while ‘Monkey’n Around’ offers a range of fun activities at a much lower height than the advanced courses. It’s easy to spend half a day in this adventure park, but there is no cafe on site, so ensure you pack lunch to enjoy in one of the park’s picnic areas. While you’re here, try your hand at constructing your own shelter with a $10 canopy hire.
6. Relax on Muriwai Beach
Drive fifteen minutes southwest of Kumeu to enjoy the black sand beaches of the mighty west coast. If you’re looking for things to see and do, visit Muriwai beach, where cliff-top walks and gannet colonies await you. Here, you’ll find 60 km of black sand beach, perfect for a beach stroll. This is also a great surfing destination. Word to the warning; conditions can get pretty rough, so it’s better suited to the experienced surfer.
