When you’ve checked off your bucket list of things to do in Queenstown, it’s time to move on to some of the stunning areas surrounding this town, including Milford Sound and New Zealand’s very own Paradise. Many incredible places of interest are only a short drive away, so buckle up to explore the best day trips from Queenstown.

1. Mount Aspiring National Park

Tolkien described Lothlórien as a dreamland of golden wonders and enchantment, and when you enter Mount Aspiring National Park, you’ll feel the magic of this fairytale. Bathed in gentle sunlight, it’s easy to see why this ethereal forest is such a popular choice. For a day walk, try the Rob Roy Track – a scenic 10 km return walk to the impressive Rob Roy Glacier. The acclaimed Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand’s ‘Great Walks’ and is a must-do in the area for keen walkers. Set against a backdrop of the snow-capped mountains, this track weaves through gorges and valleys along the turquoise waters of the Mount Aspiring National Park and into Fiordland National Park. If you’re sticking to plans for a day trip from Queenstown, check out the day walk on the Routeburn Track that starts at the Routeburn Shelter and carries onto the first overnight hut, Routeburn Flats Hut. 2. Milford Sound / Piopiotahi

This fiord is known for being one of New Zealand’s most stunning natural attractions offering impressive mountain peaks, forested cliffs, and breathtaking waterfalls. Milford Sound / Piopiotahi is a 3.5-hour journey from Queenstown, and while it’s totally worth the trip, there are quicker ways to arrive at this destination. 3. Glenorchy

45 minutes northwest of Queenstown is the rustic town of Glenorchy, whose highlights include numerous walking trails, jet boat experiences, and Middle-earth magic. Set against the northern shores of Lake Wakatipu, this town offers numerous experiences for visitors. Be sure to check out the Glenorchy jetty and the famous Glenorchy red shed. Quaint pubs and shops make for a great day out. Explore some of New Zealand’s best walking trails, such as the Greenstone and Caples tracks. The scenic drive along the road to Glenorchy makes this a must-do day trip from Queenstown.

4. Paradise

Another of the driving day trips from Queenstown lies 20km from Glenorchy, where you can experience Paradise in this aptly named town. The untouched landscape out here is undoubtedly ‘kiwi’, with green pastures, mountains in the not too far distance and clear bodies of water. A real-life paradise. To soak up the best views, try more than 1000 meters of ziplining over the beautiful views of the area. On your way into Paradise visit one of the most Instagrammable spots – the Isengard Lookout. A must for Lord of the Rings fans. This stunning area will transport you straight to the movie and leave you in awe.

5. Wanaka

Take a day trip from Queenstown to Wanaka, which is around an hour’s drive over the Crown Range and through the Cardrona Valley. This beautiful spot on the shores of Lake Wanaka offers a multitude of activities, from walking tracks to wine tours. Roy’s Peak is a 16km return day hike that offers panoramic views from an elevation of 1,578 metres. If you’re after something more low-key, try a gentle walk through the landscapes of Wanaka Lavender Farm. 6. Arrowtown

Arrowtown is about a 20-minute drive from Queenstown and offers a great range of activities for a day trip. Wander around Buckingham Street to find some of the best bars and restaurants Arrowtown provides. Have a drink under the sun while admiring the view of some stunning architecture. Step back in time to visit the Chinese Settlement of days gone by, which showcases the huts that Chinese settlers called home. The Remarkable Sweet Shop is a must to satisfy sugar cravings with an eclectic range of confectionery for those with a sweet tooth. Finish your day with a round of golf at one of the world-class resorts just outside of Arrowtown. Or, if you’d prefer, try one of the Blue Door Bar’s signature cocktails or craft beers.

7. Moke Lake

Moke Lake is only a 20-minute drive from Queenstown and offers a DOC campsite if you want to extend your stay. Enjoy the short scenic walk around the Moke Lake Loop Track or try the Mt Crichton loop for a longer walk plus some spectacular views. This track includes native bush, a waterfall, and a historic tunnel to entertain the whole family. Back at the lake, try kayaking, canoeing, or fishing before lying around to enjoy a spectacular view of the night stars. 8. Aoraki / Mount Cook

Aoraki / Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand, with a peak that stands at 3,754 metres! It’s a 3.5-hour drive from Queenstown to Mount Cook National Park, but it’s worth the time. The journey takes you through beautiful spots like the Lindis Pass and Twizel. Check out Mount Cook Village and the various walking tracks. This will be one of the most scenic road trips you’ve ever done! With helicopter experiences, glacier gliding, and skiing all available, you’ll want to allow plenty of time to make the most of this natural paradise.
