This natural heated stream is thirty-five minutes south of Rotorua and offers a free destination to bathe and relax. Located at the end of Old Waiotapu Road, this scenic spot offers a short walk and a two-metre waterfall for bathers to enjoy. Tips – don’t leave valuables in your car and take your rubbish home with you (there are no facilities onsite).

The Te Aroha Mineral Spas are one of the most famous hot pools in the North Island, and for a good reason. This complex offers bathers the chance to soak in the silky mineral waters that have brought visitors to Te Aroha for 100 years. Each spa is set in a private room with your own showers and changing area – making it the perfect couples retreat. If you’ve got kids that would rather play and splash around, try Te Aroha swim zone next door. It may not possess the same tranquillity as the mineral spas, but it has its own charm with two large pools, games, and a smaller hot pool tucked away at the top of the site.

Taupo is another destination that offers both luxury and family-friendly hot pool options. Wairakei Terraces offers a serene experience with native birds, cascading water and that iconic geyser and steam in the Wairakei Thermal Valley. Wairakei Terraces have a series of beautiful outdoor hot thermal pools, all adult only and all at varying temperatures. Treat yourself to this silica bathing experience for silky smooth skin and utter tranquility. Meanwhile, Taupo Debretts is a year-round fun recreation and relaxation resort that combines relaxing mineral waters with a warm water playground and hydro slides. Here, mineral water more than 16,000 years old springs from 667 metres below the earth to provide pure indulgence to residents. 7. Hot Water Beach, Coromandel

If you’re looking for free hot pools in the North Island, escape to hot water beach, located 30 minutes from Whitianga.
