1. Wainui Falls Track
An incredible waterfall is but only the stunning finale of this tame short walk in the Abel Tasman National Park. Starting at the Wainui Bay car park, this is a 1-hour 20-minute track through lush bush, abundant farmland, granite boulders and a suspension bridge. Be prepared to share the track, as this is one of the most popular tracks for visitors to the area during the peak summer months. Be sure to check the status of the walk on the DOC site before heading out.
2. Pupu Hydro Walkway
Discover the rich mining history of the area with this short walking track in Nelson alongside an old gold-mining water race. The water race was a marvel of its time; a channel cut through the steep hillside that would move the gold to where it was to be minded. Encapsulated by a magnificent forest of beech, podocarp and rimu, this water race is suitable for children however, do supervise them around the sections on the track where the race has worn down. Keep an eye out for some beautiful flora and fauna. This includes crayfish, tūī, weka, the South Island robin and more.

3. Whispering Falls Walk
Want to take your furry companion on one of the best dog-friendly tracks in Nelson? Then look no further than Whispering Falls. Located in Mount Richmond Forest Park, this track begins at the Hackett Car Park, just a 30-minute drive from Nelson. The 2-hour return walk will take you alongside the Hackett River and through beautiful podocarp forest. Continue across swing bridges and through the river (be prepared for some wet shoes!). The destination of this scenic walk is the cascading Whispering Falls. This waterfall is technically two, split into an upper and lower waterfall. The falls are particularly spectacular after some light rain. Stop for a picnic lunch at an area 5 minutes walk from the upper waterfall. This is a perfect short walk in Nelson for the whole family.
4. Queen’s Gardens
For a more relaxed town centre walk in Nelson check out Queen’s Gardens. This botanical park is named after Queen Victoria and was opened in celebration of her jubilee in 1892. Take a stroll around the gardens to discover trees, flowers, water features, sculptures and war memorials. This walk is perfect for the culture and art buff who is looking for a tranquil experience in the heart of Nelson.
5. Maitai River Walkway
This truly is one of the best walks in central Nelson. Join this easy track at multiple entry points in the area and follow the 8km track alongside the Maitai River by foot, by bike (although not in the Nile street section) or even by skateboard. This is the perfect track for those looking for a mix of urban and natural features. A favourite of locals for a leisurely stroll, enjoyable bike ride, peaceful run or spot to walk the dog on a leash. The track includes multiple swimming holes and picnic stops making it a great day out or a pleasant evening walk.
