Getting there

The track’s starting point is just over an hour’s drive from Te Anau and just over 30 minutes from Milford Sound. This makes Lake Marian a must-see when driving the Milford Road. This track is a fantastic addition to your day on the way to or from Milford Sound. Head down the Hollyford Road which is unsealed but suitable for most cars. Look for the turn off not long after passing The Divide. The track begins at the Lake Marian carpark.

How long is the Lake Marian Track?

Allow extra time for chilling out lakeside and soaking in the views, before beginning your descent. You can opt for a 20-minute return walk from the carpark to the waterfalls. This is a great piece of track and gives a taste of the full thing.

Track difficulty

The track varies significantly from start to finish, although most of the track is steep with uneven terrain. The rough parts of the track are more forgiving on good footwear. If you love backcountry hikes, the Lake Marian Track will be right up your alley. This track is considered to be of moderate – advanced difficulty. If you’re looking for an easy option or are less prepared, the 10 minute walk to the waterfalls is a good option.
