Two Must-Try Treetop Experiences in New Zealand

2 MIN READ

New Zealand is all about immersive nature experiences, and treetop walkways offer you the chance to view lush green canopies from a bird’s eye perspective. Both the North and South Islands offer award-winning walks, with the West Coast Tree Top Walk near Hokitika and the Redwoods Tree Top Walk in Rotorua. You’ll find something for everyone here, from accessible walking trails to high-flying adrenaline-filled adventures.

1. West Coast Tree Top Walk

Enjoy the forest of the West Coast from a unique perspective on this Hokitika tree top walk. Feel the blood pump through your body as you climb 47 metres above the forest floor to enjoy inspiring views of the Tasman Sea and the Southern Alps. Bask in exquisite views of Lake Mahinapua and explore the diversity of the West Coast forests. The area offers the chance to see black swans and mallard ducks. If you’re lucky, the bittern or white heron could also make an appearance. Within the canopy of kāmahi, mahoe, and quintinia trees, you can spot a range of New Zealand natives including tūī, bellbird, and kererū. Don’t worry if you lack knowledge of flora and fauna; handy interpretation panels will tell you all you need to know about the area’s wildlife, landforms, and heritage. Everyone can enjoy the accessible pathways, which are pram and wheelchair-friendly. Plus, golf carts are available for those with mobility issues or anyone wanting to enjoy a more relaxing experience.

After climbing through the forest, you’ll have worked up an appetite. The treetop cafe is on hand to provide a nourishing lunch to refuel your energy. Options include a big breakfast, beef nachos, or fish and chips. Vegetarian and gluten-free dishes are available, as well as a range of kid’s meals that include mini hotdogs, fish bites, chicken nuggets, or a ‘kids platter’.

2. Redwoods Tree Top Walk

Enter the Whakarewarewa Forest and immerse yourself in the enchanting surroundings of the Redwoods treetop walkway. This 700m track features 28 swing bridges at the height of 20 metres and allows you to admire 120-year-old trees. This award-winning walk enables you to enjoy the treescape from a bird’s eye view during a tranquil experience that caters to every fitness level. You can enjoy this treetop walkway by day or night or purchase a combo ticket to enjoy both experiences. Daylight gives you the opportunity to step closer to nature and admire the flora and fauna that call this environment home. In contrast, the nighttime experience offers a fantasy landscape where the woods are illuminated by soft light. If you visit in the evening, you can enjoy more than 30 exquisitely designed lanterns that float above the forest floor and guide you through the woods. This is an excellent option if you’re looking for a unique Rotorua experience to enjoy in the evening; the last admission is between 10:30 and 11:00 pm with extended hours until 12:30 am in the peak summer season. The walk is suitable for families and any person who can walk unaided; the venue also offers purpose-built baby strollers if required.

If you’re looking for a more adrenaline-fuelled experience, try the Redwoods Altitude experience!
