Lyttelton is the historic port town just 20 minutes south of Christchurch that offers a bohemian vibe and rich culture. Things to do in Lyttelton range from dining at boutique restaurants to swimming with dolphins. This town may have a modest population of 3,000, but the experiences on offer will provide you with memories that last a lifetime. Here are the top seven reasons to visit Lyttelton.
1. The range of cuisines in gourmet restaurants
Along with boutique cafes, Lyttelton offers a range of cuisines through its numerous restaurants. Super serves an ever-changing mix of seasonal meals inspired by Asian cuisines with a touch of New Zealand culture. Arbour Woodfired Pizza turns a slice of doughy delight into an eating experience in this quirky pop-up restaurant. If you’re vegan, the Shroom Room offers a host of meatless meals that you can compliment with a “magical” mushroom tea in a quirky and alternative setting. If you’re looking for an afternoon slice of something sweet, try Glamour Cake for a gourmet treat you’ll love.
2. You can drive from Lyttelton to Akaroa
A short drive (around 1.5 hours) from Lyttelton will take you to the seaside village of Akaroa, where there’s a tonne of great activities. Experience the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim with Hector’s dolphins or get up close to the Pohatu penguins with a walking tour or kayak safari (just make sure you visit in breeding season). For a more affordable but equally cute experience, visit the Alpacas for a tour and a cuddle. After spending time with the local wildlife, immerse yourself in the unique art installations of the Giant’s House, where you will find extraordinary wall mosaics and steel sculptures. If you’re looking for a sightseeing walk, the private Banks Track allows experienced hikers to explore forests and extinct volcanoes while getting up close to penguins, seals, lambs and geckos. As the sun sets, hop on a paddleboard for a night tour under the stars.

3. London Street is a must for foodies
London Street is Lyttelton’s centre for food and shopping. One of the must-visit venues is the Lyttelton Coffee Company, where they roast your coffee beans on-site and allow you to drink the fresh brew as you soak up the incredible views over the harbour. Since 2005, London Street has played host to the Lyttelton farmers market, which is open every Saturday morning from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm and is a must for any food lover.
4. Incredible scenic walks
For fitness enthusiasts, one of the great things to do in Lyttelton is take a walk through the 26 hectares of Urumau Reserve. It’s a challenging track complete with rocky sections that you’ll have to scramble up if you want to reach the crater rim. If you’d rather take a seaside stroll, head along the coastal path to Corsair Bay, which is a beautiful location for a day trip.
5. The Lyttelton ferry to Diamond Harbour
Diamond Harbour is a lovely destination that requires only a short trip on a Lyttelton ferry. Once you arrive, there are several things to do. Enjoy one of the many walks around the harbour which cater to all fitness levels and offer a range of views, or jump into the sea and take a swim at one of the local beaches. For a more artsy experience, visit Stoddart Cottage, the idyllic birthplace of Canterbury’s most prominent painter, Margaret Stoddart.
6. There’s a shipwreck to explore
Nothing says adventure like a shipwreck and Quail Island has it all: shipwrecks, former leper colonies, hidden trapdoors, and a training ground for Antarctic explorers. The loop walk around the island takes around 2.5 hours, with plenty of spots to stop off and enjoy a picnic or a swim.
7. Lyttelton to Christchurch takes only 15 minutes
Christchurch is only 15 minutes by car or taxi and 25 minutes by bus, making Lyttelton an easy destination to visit while in the South Island’s largest city. On the flip side, if you’re staying in Lyttelton then a drive to Christchurch is easy. Explore eclectic street art collections such as the Alice in Wonderland mural by Jacob Yikes, or enjoy a live music performance in Christchurch’s cultural hub, The Piano. Visit the International Antarctic Centre for activities the whole family will love. For a unique and creative experience in Christchurch, try blending your own perfume at Fragranzi. Other things to do include the hop-on hop-off London bus, a tram tour or a scenic gondola ride to see the city. Before heading back to Lyttelton, relax with a cocktail at the Pink Lady rooftop bar.
