3 MIN READ

Picton is a great hub in the beautiful Marlborough region. In summer Picton is the spot for short scenic walks, kayaking, cycling, picnics and boat tours. Heading to Picton in winter? Check out the fantastic museums, aquarium and restaurants. With pristine New Zealand attractions such as the Queen Charlotte Track on its doorstep, there are so many enticing things to do in Picton.

1. Scenic Short Walks

Stretch the legs and clock some km’s with one of Picton’s great walking tracks. Tirohanga Track is a popular choice, offering views of Picton and Waikawa from its lookout point. At a relaxed pace you’ll reach the summit in around 45 minutes. It’s a 1.2km climb; short but steep. Another fantastic Picton walk is Bobs Bay Track that follows the picturesque coastline. Enjoy the 30-minute return stoll from Shelley Beach to Bob’s Bay. Spot the Interislander and Bluebridge Cook Strait ferries on your way out, and soak up the views of Picton town and the surrounding Marlborough mountains on your way back. Check out the Snout Track and the Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary track too. These walks are one of the best things to do in Picton for free.

2. Visit a Museum

Rain or shine, a visit to one of the Picton museums is a must-do. This is a fantastic way to pass some time while waiting for the ferry service to the North Island too. Check out the Picton Heritage and Whaling Museum. If you’ve only got time to visit one museum, this is the one. Here you can gather an overview of the town’s history and its people. Maritime activities in the area and the history of whaling can also be discovered. The Edwin Fox Maritime museum is home to the Edwin Fox Ship (a ship that transported immigrants, convicts, spices and more). You can view an incredible piece of World Heritage, right here in Picton. There are also a number of art galleries in Picton that are worth a visit.

3. Hire a Sea Kayak

You can’t stand on the Picton foreshore and not want to get out on that water. This South Island paradise is the perfect spot for sea kayaking. Opt for a guided tour, or hire one and explore the bays on your own schedule. Whether you’ve got a whole weekend or just a few hours, kayaking in Picton is a fantastic way to explore the surroundings. If you’re lucky you may even spot some dolphins!

4. Grab a Bite to Eat

Long gone are the times where you would only go to Picton to cross the Cook Strait on a ferry service. Picton is now a destination, and there are some top-notch foodie spots to enjoy in Picton. A must-try is the home of cheesy deliciousness, Toastie Picton, serving up some of the best toasties in the country. Other popular spots include Oxley’s Bar & Kitchen, the classic Seumus’ Irish Bar and Cortado Restaurant & Bar. Many of these spots have unmatched sea views too!

5. Visit the Aquarium

Tuatara, giant squid, turtles and so much more are at the EcoWorld Aquarium & Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. This is a great activity to do in Picton with the family. The team at the centre are knowledgeable and passionate. Dable in a guided tour or check out their feeding times and tours! What a way to see and learn more about some native New Zealand animals.

6. Board the Marlborough Flyer

The Marlborough Flyer is a steam train that runs a journey between Picton and Blenheim. This is a great way to see the wider Marlborough sights and check out the wineries in Blenheim. The Marlborough Flyer is a historic World War I memorial locomotive, with beautifully refurbished heritage cabins and a fantastic black and red exterior. In its day, the Marlborough Flyer was the largest locomotive operating on the Picton to Blenheim route. The Picton Railway Station is right in the middle of town so it couldn’t be easier to board this steam train when in Picton.
