In the Egmont National Park/Te Papakura o Taranaki, explore lush forest, rushing waterfalls and mossy swamps that surround the stunning dormant volcano Taranaki Maunga/Mount Taranaki. Hike up the summit of the mighty mount, visit the ski field on the Eastern slopes for a winter wonderland, wander the rain forests or ‘Goblin Forest’ on the slopes or discover the towering rimu and trees below. There are endless amounts of adventure to discover at all altitudes of the park for all different levels.
1. Dawson Falls
Dawson Falls is one of the most picturesque short walks in Taranaki within the Egmont National Park. Along with the beautiful nature of the mountain canopy, you’ll be treated to the peaceful birdsong of tui, kereru and bellbirds along your walk. Opt for the 5-minute option and you’ll discover the Dawson Falls Power Station. Incredibly one of the oldest operating generators in the world! Keep an ear out for the Kapuni Stream, it powers the electricity provided to the Dawson Falls Lodge. Or take the 10-minute track to explore the area or lookout point of this stunning 18-metre waterfall.
2. The Pouakai Circuit
Have you got the adventure bug and are keen to spend 2-3 days on a circuit tramp with spectacular views? Then this is the perfect walk in Egmont National Park for you. A 25km track starting and ending at North Egmont, explore the effects of a volcanic environment. Travel through cliff faces and the active erosion of the 100-year-old Boomerang Slip. Notice the red water of the Kokowai Stream, caused by the manganese oxide from the earth. Discover Ahukawakawa Swamp and its unique flora, the result of lava extrusion.
3. Goblin Forest
Be transported to another world through this twisted forest walk. Look out for the kamahi trees. Their trunks and branches have grown to intertwine with other trees in the area. Unleash your inner child’s imagination, picturing the goblins that could make this forest their home. There certainly is a magical feeling to this track, with its thick moss-covered maze. It’s no wonder this walk in Taranaki is one of the most sought-after in the area.
4. Wilkies Pools
Essentially the finale to the Goblin Forest, this spot only adds more to the fantasy feeling of the forest walk in Egmont National Park. Crossing over the bridge of the Kapuni Stream you’ll find the ethereal Wilkies Pools. The result of the 20,000-year-old lava flow is a series of waterholes. If the pristine clear water isn’t enough to tempt you to make a splash, the naturally formed rockslide is sure to excite your inner child to brave the water below.
5. Manganui Ski Field
Enjoy the snow with this 20-30 minute walk from the car park up to the Manganui Ski Field. While this is one of the uphill walks in Taranaki, you’ll take in scenic views as you trek up the side of Mount Taranaki making it well worth the effort. While some may not consider the walk up to the ski field as a must-do, think of it as part of the whole journey. You’ll be able to relish in the alpine environment and terrain suitable for skiers of all levels.
6. Around the Mountain
A challenging bush and alpine track taking 4-5 days, this is one of the walks in Taranaki for experienced trampers. While there are markers/poles and high/low-level options in some places along the track, there is the possibility of snow, ice, tree overgrowth or river floods blocking the path. Navigation and backcountry experience is encouraged to support you along the way. For the most part, you’ll be provided with solitude and impressive views as you complete the challenge circuit around Mount Taranaki.
