Tekapo is home to the vibrant turquoise hues of the great lake nestled at its centre. Located only three hours from Queenstown and three hours from Christchurch, it’s the perfect stop-off point to enjoy a picnic as you soak up epic views of the surrounding area. Tekapo has plenty to offer and the things to do here will keep you busy for days. Allocate some time on your South Island trip to check out the scenery, hot springs, golfing and more. 1. Church Of The Good Shepherd

If you’re heading to Tekapo, or if you’ve ever seen a photograph of the area, you’re likely familiar with the Church of the Good Shepherd. This picture-perfect spot contrasts the humble nature of the modest church with the magnificent backdrop of mountainous peaks. No visit to Lake Tekapo is complete without soaking up the awe-inspiring view of this church.

Don’t miss the Sheepdog Memorial around the corner, where a statue of a Border Collie pays tribute to all the dogs who have contributed to the rich farming culture of the area. Named after James Mackenzie and his dog who became the site’s first permanent settlers, this statue pays homage to our four-legged friends.

2. The Lupins

Aside from the turquoise hues of the lake, Tekapo is also famed for its shores of lupins that blossom during the summer season of December through to February. The lupins’ purple, violet and pink hues provide a vibrant border to Lake Tekapo if you visit the area in summer.

3. Star Gazing

The clear night sky in Tekapo is outstanding, allowing you to enjoy views of the Milky Way and more after dark. Nestled in the Aoraki/Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, this is a superb spot for astrophotographers to capture the perfect shot. Even if you’re an amateur, you’ll be amazed by the unpolluted brightness of the galaxy above.

4. A Round of Golf

The Cairns Golf Course sits on the hill overlooking Lake Tekapo and the surrounding mountains, making this one of the most scenic golf courses in New Zealand. Play 9 or 18 holes and enjoy the well-preserved, minimal course that is true to its natural landscape and hasn’t been overly disturbed. Pay your green fees at the honesty box, or pop into the resort reception in town to hire clubs and a golf cart.

5. Take A Scenic Flight

Air Safaris offer you the chance to take to the skies and enjoy a birdseye view of the Mackenzie Region, complete with serene lakes and rugged wilderness. Try the Mackenzie Explorer for an epic view of Lake Tekapo and the surrounding village, plus ancient glacial deposits in the surrounding valleys. You’ll experience the Glenmore, Mt Hay, and Godley Peaks Sheep Stations during your trip, where idyllic homesteads nestle in nature and merino sheep roam at high altitudes. In the winter, you can enjoy a glacial landing at 5500 feet, allowing you to step foot on a white blanket of snow and admire the majestic views surrounding you.

If you want to take in the surrounding regions too, opt for the ‘Grand Traverse’, which also incorporates the peaks of the highest mountains in Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park and the magnificence of the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers that spill into lush forest surroundings.

6. Lake Tekapo Regional Park

This regional park is one of the most popular in the area and provides several things to do, from walking and cycling to orienteering and swimming. In addition, you can bring along a kayak to explore the local area by water.

If you love walks, don’t miss Cowans Hill Walkway, where you can enjoy the stunning scenery of the surrounding area via river banks and bridge crossings on a 90-minute walk that rewards you with a 360-degree view of Tekapo. You can opt to hike or cycle this track, and there are several wetland areas along the way where you can spot a feathered friend or two.

7. Lake Alexandrina

If you’re looking for things to do in Tekapo, check out the smaller sister lake, Lake Alexandrina. Here you can enjoy a peaceful afternoon, admiring impressive reflections in the waters of this lake. Grab a rowboat and enjoy a gentle float on the surface.

8. Skiing or Snowboarding on the Tekapo Ski Fields

If you’re wondering what to do in Tekapo in winter, look no further than the Roundhill Ski Area. This fun family resort offers enchanting views of Lake Tekapo, Aoraki / Mount Cook, and the rugged peaks of the Southern Alps, along with a friendly vibe and community feel. Roundhill offers nine trails plus rails and jumps to suit all abilities. You can experience 783 of vertical metres (the highest in Australasia) with a 2133m elevation, offering you unbeaten views of the area.

9. Soak at Tekapo Springs

After long days of adventures, there’s no better way to relax than to visit Tekapo Springs, where you can enjoy beautiful tiered hot springs. Additional facilities include water slides and activities to entertain the kids, an ice skating rink, and a snow tube park during winter. Tekapo Springs is the perfect balance of recreation and relaxation amidst the serene alpine landscape abundant in native trees and plants.

10. Ice Skating

Ice skating at Tekpo Springs has to be the most scenic ice skating in the country. This outdoor rink is surrounded by mountains and untouched landscapes and in winter, snow. Skate for a while before enjoying the picnic tables and open fire-pit rink side.
