Whanganui, the beautiful coastal city in the Manawatū-Whanganui region, is fantastic spot for beach goers. With a huge variety, all in one area, these Whanganui Beaches provide the goods. There’s great swimming, dog walking, camping spots, dog walking and even a few waterfalls. Next time you’re planning a North Island getaway, add Whanganui to your list and check out these beautiful beaches!

1. Castlecliff Beach

Swimming, surfing, fishing and walking. Castlecliff Beach is the home of the Whanganui Surf Life Saving Club, and is a popular spot for swimmers and surfers on the west coast. This beach is buzzing with people yet still has a classic-kiwi remote beach feel. It takes less than 10 minutes to drive to Castlecliff Beach from Whanganui, so it’s well worth a visit. Especially for an incredible sunrise or sunset.

2. Kai Iwi Beach / Mowhanau Beach

Kai Iwi Beach is a go-to for family outings and easy beach days. A day at this Whanganui Beach is effortless, with plenty of amenities around. There’s a playground, toilets, changing rooms and BBQ’s. This is an awesome swimming beach in summer too. The Kai Iwi Beach Holiday Park is nearby, and the surrounding small community gives this place an addictive beach vibe. With plenty of places available for short-term rental, this is the ideal holiday spot in Manawatū. Oh, and the beach itself is incredibly picturesque!

3. Ototoka Beach

This beach is unique to the others in the area. Ototoka Beach is surrounded by cliff faces and is off the beaten track. Park your car at Ototoka Beach car park and head along the walking track to the beach. Within minutes, you’ll come to the Ototoka Falls. Both the Upper Falls and the Lower Falls make this area a hidden gem. Ototoka Beach is just under 30 minutes from Whanganui. From waterfalls to a beautiful coastline, a visit to Ototoka Beach is a real treat!

4. Himatangi Beach

Although not in Whanganui, Himatangi Beach is a must visit in the region. Just an hours drive down the road, a visit to Himatangi Beach also provides a wee getaway from the city. This is a classic west coast beach with scattered driftwood and sandy dunes. It’s a lovely spot to set up a picnic and enjoy a sunset.

5. Foxton Beach

Foxton Beach is another beach that’s out of the city, but still in the Manawatū-Whanganui region. Pack up the car and drive just over an hour south to the quaint town of Foxton. This beach has plenty of lush sand that’s great for long walks and lazy afternoons. Visitors from Palmerston North also flock here making it a popular summer swimming spot.
