1. The TranzAlpine Train to Greymouth

The TranzAlpine Train offers a coast to coast journey through one of the most stunning landscapes in the world. Beginning in Christchurch, you will traverse the patchwork plains of Canterbury before approaching the vast wall of the southern alps. Though this barrier marked the end of the line for many years, a remarkable feat of engineering now allows you to weave around the mountainous landscapes as you pass through 15 tunnels and cross four viaducts. The Otira tunnel marks the transition from east to west, where you’ll notice the landscape change to vibrant green scenery and lush river valleys. The TranzAlpine offers travellers a relaxing getaway from Christchurch to indulge the senses while soaking up the contrasting views of the east and west coasts.

2. Akaroa

Akaroa is less than an hour and a half drive from Christchurch and offers a range of once-in-a-lifetime experiences. You can swim alongside Hector’s dolphins – one of the smallest and rarest breeds in the world – or keep your feet dry and enjoy a guaranteed sighting aboard a Black Cat cruise. 3. Arthur’s Pass

The journey to Arthur’s Pass village takes around two hours from Christchurch and offers a delightful range of activities. About an hour into the drive, you’ll encounter Castle Hill conservation area, a surreal landscape of giant rocks that look like they were placed by an ancient civilisation but are a natural occurrence. This 30-minute walk extends across hilly terrain and offers options for all fitness levels as you can explore the stones as much or as little as you’d like. They provide some excellent Instagrammable spots that make it look as though you’re sitting in the centre of majestic ruins. When the sky is clear, you’ll have a backdrop of the southern alps to complete your view.

As you approach Arthur’s Pass village, you’ll find a campsite, an information centre, and a couple of great walks. There is a statue of a Kea along with information about these alpine birds. Iif you walk the Devil’s Punchbowl track, you might meet some feathered friends such as the South Island Robin. At the end of your walk, you’ll be rewarded with majestic views of the cascading waters, but be warned. There is a stretch of 220 steps to challenge your fitness along the way! Other than that, the track is relatively easy terrain with clear and accessible paths.

4. Ashburton

Just over an hour’s drive from Christchurch, you’ll find the large town of Ashburton nestled between the Rakaia and Rangitata Rivers. If you want to get your trip off to an adrenaline-fuelled start, try taking the Discovery Jet boat down the Rakaia Gorge. If you’d prefer to keep your feet on dry ground, there are a range of parks and gardens to explore, from the popular Ashburton Domain to the elegant Trott’s garden. The Hakatere Conservation Park offers a range of walks too. As well as being a superb spot for an outdoor adventure, Ashburton offers a great wet weather destination with its Aviation Museum and Vintage Railway. Whatever you choose, you’re guaranteed an exhilarating experience. And Hanmer Springs isn’t just for thrill-seekers; the destination also provides a peaceful setting for some well-deserved relaxation. Try a dip in the hot pools or sample fine wines at one of the local vineyards. On a sunny day, the Forest Amble walk will keep the whole family entertained. This is a fantastic forest walk with many things to spot from tuataras to giant mushrooms. Once you’re finished for the day, put your feet up in a luxurious glamping spot.
